Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Originally commissioned as a method of encouraging more visitors to an area where the local economy desires visitors, the 18m sculpture was started in 1927 and finished in 1947. Though there doesn’t outwardly seem to be much to keep visitors at the area for a day, be ready to spend a bit there as Mount Rushmore is more than a historic carving in the face of a mountain. In the day, exploit the gorgeous area to do some hiking or biking. There’s lots of fauna in the Black Hills area to provide image opportunities and excite younger members of the family. If it is a sunny day, cool off a little in the Lincoln Borglum Museum which shows a thirteen minute movie about Mount Rushmore.
After take a ramble along the Presidential Trail which begins at the Grandview Patio ( above the theatre ), which is one of the finest viewing areas of the commemorative, and ends at the Sculptor’s Studio. Here you can learn more on the process concerned with making a commemorative on such a big scale. If you have youngsters in your party, there’s also a kids’s program controlled by a ranger which lasts about an a half hour, but they have to be accompanied by fogeys. Immediately following the show, Mount Rushmore is illuminated and remains lit for two hours. If you only have a couple of hours to spend, then try and organize your visit so you not only enjoy the commemorative in daylight, but can also experience the joys of seeing the large sculpture illuminated against the dark evening sky.
